The mill room

The arc is a sentence. Isolated stamps are typos.

We keep a steel bar, a paint stick, and a floor that still remembers mill oil. The work is not a catalog of degrees. It is one sentence the irons have to finish together.

Akron players bring sets that were bent in three different decades by three different hands. The 4-iron still thinks it is a muscleback from a Cuyahoga Falls basement. The 9-iron was flattened after a wedding-round shank. Those two clubs no longer share a language.

On this desk the 6-iron speaks first. We paint it, we walk it, we write its lie as the spine of the curve. Then we ask every other iron to rhyme. If a club will not rhyme, we either bend it or we write it out of the sentence.

Cascade Valley after a March thaw is the exam. Clay grabs a toe that a winter mat never mentioned. Canal humidity adds a little extra grab on the heel of a scoring club. The arc has to survive both.

What we will not do

We will not sell a new head to hide a crooked arc. Hardware is a later conversation. First the curve has to close.
